Back to the Roots in the Digital Age: the “Greccio” Mystery Play in Bieńkówka

📅 January 2026 | Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Bieńkówka

The story of the first nativity scene, without a breaking-news ticker

In a world that moves so fast that news from an hour ago is already history, it is easy to forget words that carry real weight. Yet in the church in Bieńkówka, a village in southern Poland, time seems to flow to a different rhythm.

Like earlier moving productions in our parish, such as the Parish Christmas Nativity Play and the show “What Happened in Bethlehem?”, this year's “Greccio” mystery play turned out to be far more than a parish custom. It was a return to the roots, brought to life by the local community.

Austerity instead of ornament

What struck me from the very first scene was the discipline and respect for the audience. The team, under the guidance of Marcelina Chromy, Renata Szczepaniak and Fr Roland Hopciaś, created a complete performance using the natural space of the church. There was no room for stage tricks or unnecessary technology.

Free of theatrical spotlights, the interior of the church became a backdrop perfect in its simplicity. The dim nave and the cool stone walls built the atmosphere better than any set ever could. When, in the finale, the only light came from candles carried by the actors, the effect was striking.

The human side of holiness and the strength of community

The weight of the lead role, Francis, rested on the shoulders of Mikołaj Kołacz. His interpretation had no cheap pathos, only the focus worthy of the Poor Man of Assisi. Especially moving was the scene of his encounter with Giuseppe (played by Michał Pęcek), a man broken by fate.

The play also stood out for bringing generations together. Alongside the young people (with an excellent storyline of a cynical “gang of orphans”), adults from the Nazareth Community took to the stage. It is a rare sight to see a local community unite in such a genuine creative effort, crowned with beautiful music.

Goodness as the news of the day

Stepping out of the church into the frosty air of 2026, I caught myself not wondering how this story would “perform” on Monday morning. Instead of searching for a catchy headline, I felt at peace. The organisers in Bieńkówka created something so pure that no media filter was needed.

This year's nativity play produced hundreds of unique shots. The gallery is split into two parts to capture both the dynamics of the performance and the extraordinary atmosphere of the finale.
